Oakmont Roadways

Westinghouse Communities of Naples won the Merit Award in the Preservation and Restoration Category from the American Society of Landscape Architect Florida Chapter for the roadways in the Oakmont neighborhood of award-winning master planned community of Pelican Bay.

Accommodating the infrastructural needs of a residential development in a unique ecosystem was achieved by relocating threatened elements of that very system. A roadway design is established that minimizes water use while featuring preservation and restoration.

Before beginning to develop the single family homesites in the Oakmont neighborhood, Landscape Architect David Driapsa, walked the area and tagged for saving many trees that were hosts to orchids and bromeliads. He oversaw transplanting of the trees that were going to be in the path of the internal roads and houses into safe places within the parkway center medians within the neighborhood

The entire Oakmont neighborhood of 130 homesites is a designated Xeriscape landscape area, and has an extraordinary character- very much due to David's efforts in requiring preservation and planting of trees, shrubs and groundcover native to our area.

Judges' Comments: "A potential wave of the future."
